The English department incorporates projects which require students to choose novels to read and research about. At Bookman's, students were able to purchase novels that they could use for these projects. In addition, they were encouraged to look at books that might help in a future career, or even ones that cater to hobbies like cooking or art.
"We are hoping to repeat the trip each block for the first flex day", wrote Mrs. Manning. Bookman’s also has a teen reading program. For every 10 books that a student reads and writes a summary for, the program awards students between the ages of 13 to 17 with free books.
Students returned to campus, each with a brown bag in hand sharing with other teachers and administrators what they had seen and purchased. Trips like these are Estrella High School's way of helping students build a personal library on a budget as well as foster an excitement for reading.
