Harlem Renaissance Fair comes to Estrella
On January 21, Mrs. Garcia's class hosted the first ever Harlem Renaissance Fair for the entire night program.
What first started as a class novel written by an author who lived during the Harlem Renaissance soon turned into an ambitious two week project. Over 25 students in Mrs. Garcia's fifth period English class participated in the planning, preparation, and hosting of the fair for the rest of the students attending Estrella's night program. The fair included presentations by groups which covered all aspects of the era including dance, art, music, poetry, and fashion. Students sampled food that had been generously sponsored by Golden Corral and donated by students, teachers, and staff. Several parents also attended after seeing all of the hard work that went into making the fair possible.
"It was the students who came up with the idea themselves, and saw it through to the end," said Mrs. Garcia.
To Doug Fredendall, one of Mrs. Garcia's students, the fair "was a huge success due to the inclusion of everyone at the school. Everyone seemed to enjoy it." Doug felt that the presentation boards created by the class were the best part of the entire experience because everyone showed creativity.
Through dedication and hard work, Ms. Garcia's class was able to take what they discovered about the Harlem Renaissance and turn it into a fun learning experience for the rest of the school.
