On Friday August 26, the Sidewinders played at NFL Yet in the first game of the season. The boys clawed a 26-20 victory, and while it was not a blowout game, the team worked well together under the leadership of Coach Maynard. Mrs. Zordani, several teachers, and many supportive parents and students attended the game. Mrs. Osterberg and her new cheerleading squad were also on hand to provide some team spirit to the crowd.
The boys returned to school Monday excited about the win, and ready for the next games ahead. This victory is but one of many, but it was definitely a good start to the season! Join us this coming Friday as we challenge Peoria Accelerated High School! If you are a morning student who goes to four periods or a night student who starts third period, chances are you need a ride to or from school. The city of Avondale presents the ZOOM bus! A direct route stops right by Estrella High School for the convenience of our students. The ZOOM bus operates between 5:30 am to 8:30 pm weekdays and only costs $0.50 per trip. For students who are looking to graduate on time, and in some cases, early, this is a small price to pay and much better than walking several blocks in 120 degree weather!
Check out Avondale's website for more information about the ZOOM bus, or feel free to ask the front office for more information. ![]() After the first week, the English department took a bus of students to Bookman’s Entertainment Exchange and Half-Priced Books. The English department incorporates projects which require students to choose novels to read and research about. At Bookman's, students were able to purchase novels that they could use for these projects. In addition, they were encouraged to look at books that might help in a future career, or even ones that cater to hobbies like cooking or art. "We are hoping to repeat the trip each block for the first flex day", wrote Mrs. Manning. Bookman’s also has a teen reading program. For every 10 books that a student reads and writes a summary for, the program awards students between the ages of 13 to 17 with free books. Students returned to campus, each with a brown bag in hand sharing with other teachers and administrators what they had seen and purchased. Trips like these are Estrella High School's way of helping students build a personal library on a budget as well as foster an excitement for reading. Tomorrow, August 19, is another flex Friday. Don't forget to make those absences up! Stay on top of your flexing and make sure you come the same week as your absence to ensure you get full credit for your work. Don't need to flex? Come anyway and use the time for extra tutoring and quiet time to get work done. Check the back of the main office for your pickup stop and time if you are riding the bus. We look forward to seeing you here!
Does your car say 'Wash Me'? Have the past few monsoon storms left your car muddy? Help the cheerleading squad raise money for uniforms and trips and make your car sparkle. Extra donations are appreciated. Tell everyone to come to Estrella High School!
